This week, we hosted the third seminar in the Value-Based Health Care Global Insights Seminar Series. We were joined by Jennifer Clawson, Global Leader of Boston Consulting Group's VBHC program who discussed value-based procurement in MedTech.

Jennifer discussed how value-based procurement can deliver value by offering a multidisciplinary collaborative approach to overcome short-term cost containment pressures while moving towards patient-centric models and she also identified the benefits for providers and suppliers.

In this seminar, Jennifer also provided some recommended actions for providers. If you missed this session, head to our Twitter to catch up with the live tweets here.

We also have some more great sessions coming up in the next seminars part of the series covering topics including outcomes collection and reporting and tech enablers. Find out more here.
Reader poll
Last week we asked if you have found it easier or harder to exercise during lockdowns and while majority found it easier, some have struggled. One great way to stay active is to spend more time outdoors in your garden and many have been doing just that. In the past year, sales of herb and vegetable plants increased by 27%

Have you been spending more time in your garden during lockdown?

Not COVID-19

What a week! Nothing says not COVID like an earthquake. We hope you kept safe during this week’s earthquake and if like us, you were looking for some more information about earthquakes, in this article you’ll find out that earthquakes can be thought of like pavlovas. COVID-19

COVID-19 lockdowns are challenging for all, but particularly for those living in aged care facilities. Many residents haven’t seen their families in the flesh for months in parts of the country with COVID outbreaks. Families have also expressed difficulties around advocating for their family members’ needs.

While spending more time at home, many have taken the opportunity to get stuck into some gardening. In the past year, sales of herb and vegetable plants increased by 27% and  at the start of the pandemic, the demand for seeds and seedlings was so great that many nurseries had to put caps on the number people could buy.

Dementia

This Dementia Action Week, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) released a new report, Dementia in Australia, which revealed that dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia and the number of people living with it is continuing to increase. One in 12 Australians aged 65 and over are living with dementia, and this increases to 2 in 5 Australians aged 90 and over.

Recent research from Dementia Australia has found that more than two-thirds of people living with dementia anticipated they might experience discrimination. Maree McCabe AM, CEO Dementia Australia, said the research shows that people living with dementia and carers experience discrimination that can lead to social isolation, loneliness and poor mental health. And COVID-19 has intensified these experiences.

Mental health

Around the country, psychologists are reporting waiting times that are blowing out for new patients who are often being told they won't be able to get help for four to six months. Australian Psychological Society chief executive Zena Burgess wants to see trainee psychologists given permission to do more work across the public and private sector as a short-term solution to help meet the current surge in demand.

One in five Australians report experiencing high levels of psychological distress, according to an Australian Bureau of Statistics survey. While workers have been taking days off for mental health for decades, often under the guise of something like a stomach bug or sore back, more workplace are formalising the practice. In June last year, Unilever introduced ‘doona days’, a Friday off where staff were encouraged to do whatever they needed to rejuvenate. Investing in employees’ mental health is a no brainer - a 2014 report by PwC Australia and Beyond Blue found for every $1 an organisation spends on appropriate mental health actions, they will on average get $2.30 in benefits in return. And with many workers at home continuing to experience the impacts of the pandemic and blurred lines between work and home life, some are experiencing burnout.

Nutrition and diet

Have you been indulging in cheese during lockdown? Feeling a bit guilty about it? Well, new research challenges the view that full-fat dairy products, such as cheese, yoghurt and milk, should be avoided because of their high saturated fat content. According to the new research, choosing full-fat dairy options is no worse for heart health and a higher consumption of dairy fat may be linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

Vaccines

This week, Australia received its first shipment of Moderna vaccines. Health Minister Greg Hunt said the Moderna doses meant more GP clinics would be able to administer the vaccine to the public.

Children until 12 could soon be eligible to receive a Pfizer jab if and when the company makes an application to the TGA. Minister Hunt has encouraged Pfizer to apply to have its vaccine approved for kids aged under 12 in Australia at the same time as it applies for approval in the United States

In a new statement, ATAGI said some Australians – particularly the severely immunocompromised – will likely need a third jab to get the full benefits of vaccination. This would be part of their primary vaccination program, and not considered a "booster". It’s expected more advice on boosters will be available by the end of next month.
